Corruption scheme at the Airport: NAC investigates 7 customs inspectors and individuals for corruption actions
01.04.2024 426 ViewsThe NAC officers and Chisinau municipal prosecutors are investigating several customs inspectors of the Chisinau International Airport Customs Post and individuals in a corruption case. It is about a criminal scheme manifested by the systematic claim of financial means from passengers to facilitate the illegal introduction or removal of various goods from the country.
According to the administered evidence, the customs inspectors are suspected of having claimed and accepted monetary means from passengers in amounts between 50 and 1000 dollars to allow them to introduce or remove goods in/from the Republic of Moldova, bypassing the tax payment procedures in accordance with the provisions of the legislation in force.
This morning, the NAC officers carried out 16 searches in a criminal case based on the fact of committing the crime of passive corruption and active corruption. The criminal investigation actions targeted the residences, work offices and means of transport of the persons involved in the commission of the crimes – customs officers and individuals.
At the moment, 3 customs inspectors are detained for 72 hours, and another 4 customs inspectors are being investigated while at liberty. The criminal investigation continues under the procedural leadership of the prosecutors of the Chisinau Municipal Prosecutor's Office. The Customs Service also provided support in documenting the case.
We remind that any person is presumed to be innocent until a final and irrevocable court decision is issued.
