The National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC) and the prosecutors of the municipality of Balti have announced the discovery of a corruption scheme in the north of the country involving employees of the National Road Transport Agency (ANTA). Four inspectors were detained for 72 hours following over 20 searches carried out this morning.
According to the facts investigated, four employees of the Road Transport Control Directorate within ANTA allegedly demanded and accepted various illicit remunerations from transporters, who were active in the north of the country, on a monthly basis, for so-called protection, manifested by conducting superficial checks on drivers or not applying appropriate sanctions for admitted violations.
The inspectors' actions were documented by the NAC in a criminal case of passive corruption, to which 14 other files were later connected. Today, during the searches at the suspects' homes, financial means were found in different currencies, the origin of which is yet to be established, as well as draft documents with the identity data of the carriers and information carriers.
The investigations into the case continue under the procedural leadership of the prosecutors of the Bălți Municipal Prosecutor's Office. At the same time, we specify that in the documentation of the scheme, ANTA provided informational support.
