Experts from the Delegation of the European Union, responsible for the areas of anticorruption, combating money laundering and recovery of criminal assets, had a working meeting with the director of the NAC, Mr. Ruslan Flocea. They highlighted the need to continue the structural reforms in the sector that will improve the efficiency and transparency of the NAC. The EU also reiterated its support on the long term that should change the life of ordinary citizens and increase their trust in the central anticorruption institutions.
During the meeting, the director pointed out the main problems and deficiencies faced by the Center at the present moment and asked the experts to support the initiatives to reform the NAC in terms of strengthening the institutional capacities and strengthening the Criminal Assets Recovery Agency. "The main objectives to be achieved by the Center, in a very short time, are: the eradication of systemic corruption in the public and private sectors, the repatriation of the money stolen following the devaluation of the financial-banking system and the restoration of citizens confidence in the state institutions. At the same time, the society expects progress in the fight against big corruption, that should not be based on political affiliation, and in order to fight high-level corruption it is necessary to thoroughly review the NAC`s competences and to set new strategic priorities".
In their turn, representatives of the Delegation stated that the European Union has always been a sincere partner of the Republic of Moldova and continues to be. They reiterated their support for strengthening the law institutions by implementing international standards in investigating corruption, providing consultative assistance and expertise in the field of recovering property from offenses, as well as by exchanging best practices on the prevention component.
We should mention that, the National Anticorruption Center has benefited from several assistance projects from the EU delegation that aimed to provide the consultative and financial support for strengthening the capacities of the law enforcement bodies in the fight against corruption. Currently, the Center benefits from European expertise within the Twinning project "Support to the strengthening of the operational capacities of the Law Enforcement Agencies of the Republic of Moldova in the field of investigation of criminal acts of corruption", the Twinning "Support to the strengthening of the system for anti-money laundering in the Republic of Moldova" and the CLEP project that is co-funded and implemented by the Council of Europe - "Controlling Corruption through Law Enforcement and Prevention".
