Two police officers of the National Investigation Inspectorate, detained following the whistleblowing to the National Anticorruption Line
01.06.2021 271 ViewsTwo employees of the National Investigation Inspectorate (NII) were recently detained by the NAC officers and anticorruption prosecutors in a case of passive corruption. They were denounced to the National Anticorruption Line by a man who stated that two police officers allegedly claimed money to get rid of a criminal case. Shortly after, the lawmen were identified with the support of the specialized subdivision of the General Police Inspectorate.
According to the denunciation, the police officers would have intimidated the whistleblower for several days, summoning him to give a bribe not to be held liable for alleged fraud. He told the prosecutors and the NAC officers that policemen repeatedly insisted to be given 500 euros, calling him and setting up meetings. He also said that NII officers would have threatened that in case he did not give the money, they would detain him.
A criminal investigation was initiated in this case for passive corruption, and the two policemen were detained and placed in the NAC detention center for 72 hours. If found guilty, they risk imprisonment, a criminal fine and the deprivation of the right to hold office for a certain period of time.
We remind, that every person is presumed to be innocent until the final and irrevocable decision of the court is pronounced.
The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office is conducting the criminal investigation.
