A lawyer from the capital came under the scrutiny of the National Anticorruption Center, after it was denounced that he allegedly claimed a bribe worth 52,000 euros from the mother of the defendant, whose interests he represented in the courts. According to the whistleblower, the money was asked to get him out of prison, the man being accused of murder.
According to the materials of the case, the suspect contacted the defendant's mother, claiming that he would have influence over some magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice and that he could determine them to acquit her son, by a final and irrevocable decision. For his services, the lawyer allegedly demanded 45,000 euros, and later - another 7,000 euros. In total, the whistleblower transmitted personally and through third parties the amount of 52,000 euros.
After he was denounced, the officers of the General Territorial Directorate North of the NAC and the prosecutors from the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office initiated a criminal investigation for influence peddling. Today, following the criminal prosecution actions, the lawyer was detained and placed in detention center for 72 hours. If found guilty, he faces up to 8 years in prison or a criminal fine.
