A telephone call to the National Anticorruption Line resulted the initiation of the criminal case for passive corruption against an employee of the National Inspectorate of Public Security (NIPS). The police officer was denounced by a driver who complained to the NAC that he allegedly was stopped in traffic and was asked for a bribe.

According to the whistleblower, on Saturday morning, he was stopped by NIPS crew for exceeding the speed limit near the intersection of the Calea Orheiului and Ceucari streets. In order not to draw the minutes and not to take the driving license, the police officer would have asked 500 lei. After giving the money, the man called the NAC.

As the result of the actions, carried out on the scene by the NAC and prosecutors, the amount of almost 4000 lei was found in the car of the NIPS crew, including the money given by the whistleblower. A criminal case for passive corruption was initiated against the patrol agent (art. 324, p.4), currently, he is investigated at large.

If found guilty, he faces a fine from 1000 to 2000 conventional units and deprivation of the right to hold certain public offices or to exercise certain activity for the period of up to 5 years.

Every person is presumed to be innocent until the final and irrevocable decision of the court is pronounced.

The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office is conducting the criminal investigation.
