CARA presented the most important achievements of 2023: Seizures of assets worth 1.8 billion lei, including dozens of luxury cars and properties abroad

The Criminal Assets Recovery Agency (CARA) presented, in the context of the anti-corruption week, a balance report, in which it notified the most important achievements of the Agency during 2023. Among them, the seizures applied to assets, including cars luxury, on properties in the country and abroad, as well as taking over the presidency of the BAMIN network – a first for the Republic of Moldova.

According to the CARA, in 11 months of the current year, assets and funds were seized in the amount of over 1.8 billion lei, of which over 1.4 billion lei are the seizures imposed on properties in Spain and France in the file bank fraud. The Agency also mentions seizures of cryptocurrency, the current value of which is approximately 200 thousand dollars, the unavailability being ordered in the context of an anabolic steroid smuggling case.

In 2023, the CARA seized 80 cars, including luxury ones. Among them are models such as: Ferrari, Porsche Panamera, Mercedes, BMW, Range Rover. The most expensive seized car, a Land Rover Range Rover model, was valued at 2,690,488 lei. In the chapter of taking over administration and placement on the budget treasury accounts, the CARA reports 300 million lei.

The agency also has announced for the reporting period the carrying out of parallel financial investigations regarding 178 subjects, including regarding a former president of the country, a former prime minister, judges, deputies, employees of legal bodies and other public institutions.

The CARA notes the taking over, for the first time, of the presidency of the Balkan Asset Management Interagency Network BAMIN and the organization of the General Assembly in Chisinau - an event that brought together representatives of 25 jurisdictions. The agency moves to the chapter of important achievements of 2023, the creation of the National Platform for the Recovery of Criminal Assets, the provision of methodological assistance to jurisdictions in Central the CARA in the field of the recovery of criminal assets, the positive assessment of ARBI in the compartment of tracking and administration of criminal assets within the OECD Assessment Exercise, such as and the mention of progress in the field of recovery in the European Commission's Country Report of 08 November 2023.
