The criminal case accusing two former employees of the Department of Penitentiary Institutions (DPI), initiated by the National Anticorruption Center for abuse of office, reaches the court. The Anticorruption Prosecution Office completed the criminal investigation and sent it to the court for substantive examination.

According to the administered evidence, the Department of Penitentiary Institutions and an economic agent concluded in 2015 a contract for the delivery of coal to several subdivisions of the Department in the total amount of 9,008,160 lei. However, one of the defendants, who at that time held the position of deputy director of the DPI together with the head of the Logistics Department within the DPI, gave telephone instructions to the heads of the logistics sections within the penitentiaries or directly to the heads of the penitentiaries (the second defendant held the position of deputy head, at the same time head of the logistics service of Penitentiary No. 10 Goian), to sign in the "Goods received" column on all fiscal invoices for the delivery of coal presented by the supplier's representatives, regardless of whether the coal indicated in the invoices was delivered or not , noting that this is the indication of the DPI management.

Therefore, it was established that from the total volumes of coal, delivered for each institution subordinate to the DPI, different quantities were missing, in total causing the National Administration of Penitentiaries, a damage in the total amount of approximately 400,000 lei.

Regarding four defendants, at their request, the criminal prosecution was terminated due to the intervention of the limitation period, and the other two did not admit their guilt and did not express their consent to the termination of the criminal prosecution, the criminal case being sent for substantive examination to the Chisinau District Court, Buiucani headquarters.

If they are found guilty of committing crimes of abuse of office, they risk a penalty in the form of a fine ranging from 6000 to 16000 lei or imprisonment of up to 3 years, in both cases with the deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or to exercise a certain activity for a period of 2 to 5 years (the favorable sentence in force at the time of the crime).
