The NAC officers carry out searches within a corruption case and falsification of public documents, in which the illegal actions of some people involved in facilitating the process of acquiring the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova by foreign citizens, the applicants being mainly from the Russian Federation, are being investigated. The actions take place after several cases of illegal acquisition of citizenship were reported to the NAC by the management of the Public Services Agency (PSA).

According to the investigated facts, during the years 2022-2024, several foreign citizens, intending to acquire the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova by recognizing the fact that they have at least one of their parents, grandmother or great-grandmother born on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, acting personally or through authorized persons , using civil status documents with distorted content, obtained extracts from the birth certificates of persons born on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. The documents were issued in the name of persons who had the same first and last name as the alleged relatives (great-grandmother, great-grandmother), so that they met the conditions for acquiring the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova through recognition.

As part of the procedural actions carried out by the NAC officers on 06/03/2024 under the direction of the Chisinau Municipal Prosecutor's Office, 10 searches were carried out, as a result of which objects and documents relevant to the criminal case were seized. Thus, six people have the status of suspect and will, after hearings, be investigated in a state of freedom.

We specify that, during the analysed period (01.01.2022-15.04.2024), 4317 applications for acquiring the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova were submitted, of which 2577 applications were accepted, 210 were refused and the rest are in the process of examination or suspended until receiving the answers from the authorities.

The investigation is conducted under the procedural leadership of the Chisinau Municipal Prosecution Office, and the informational support in documenting the case in all aspects is provided by the PSA.
