Synthesis: NAC’s CARA seized assets worth over 7 million lei, and four people were sent to the accused’s bench in a corruption case

The National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC) reports several activities in the areas of preventing, combating corruption, and recovering criminal assets for the previous week. Thus, the NAC’s Criminal Assets Recovery Agency (CARA) seized illicit assets worth over 7,170,644 Lei. The seized assets include 3 social capitals, a residential building, 55 agricultural lands, and one for construction. The seizures were applied based on the prosecutors’ delegation and concern a case managed by the State Fiscal Service.

In the field of combating corruption - four people, including a priest, were sent to the dock in the case regarding bribery for places in the "Saint Lazar" cemetery in the capital. This is a case initiated by the National Anti-corruption Centre in which six people from the administration of the "Saint Lazar" cemetery in Chisinau were detained, investigated for 142 charges. The NAC officers conducted searches at 22 addresses - at the cemetery administration headquarters, at the homes and work offices of the suspects - and found evidence relevant to the case, including sums of money, in different currencies.

At the stage of criminal investigation, the NAC's CARA applied seizures worth over 2 million lei, including on residential and non-residential premises and buildings, on means of transport, but also on a construction site. Also, over half a million lei, of the total seizure, constituted cash.

Other activities of the NAC, carried out last week, include: completing an operational analysis, sending 16 anti-corruption expert reports to the authors, receiving 34 calls to the National Anti-corruption Hotline, issuing 78 integrity records and registering 923 materials in the Centre’s office.

At the moment, 7 people, preventively arrested in NAC files, are being held in penitentiary institutions in the country.
