The NAC Synthesis: Influence peddling worth thousands of euros in rape and driving license cases, assets worth over 5.8 million lei seized

The National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC) presents the main actions carried out in the previous week in the field of combating and preventing corruption, as well as in the criminal assets recovery. During the reporting period, anticorruption officers documented two cases of influence peddling.

In the first case, a person is being investigated for allegedly demanding and receiving 20,000 euros from the relative of a man convicted of rape, claiming that he would have influence over judges and that he could induce them to adopt a favorable decision regarding his release from detention. In the second case, a driving instructor from Orhei is being investigated for allegedly receiving 1,200 euros (600 euros each from two candidates), under the control of the NAC, promising to influence employees of the Orhei Vehicle Registration and Driver Documentation Section of the Public Services Agency to facilitate their passing of the practical exam and obtaining driving licenses.

During the reference period, criminal investigation officers reported the initiation of 9 new criminal cases and proposed 2 files for transmission to the court. Currently, five people are in the NAC detention centre, and another eleven people, accused in the files managed by the NAC, are placed in preventive arrest in penitentiaries.

The Criminal Assets Recovery Agency (CARA) seized 125 assets worth over 5.8 million lei and took over 600 000 lei under administration. Other seizures, previously applied, amounting to over 10.6 million lei, were confirmed by the courts. At the same time, freezing orders were issued on 116 assets, 5 social capitals and 17 means of transport.

In the field of corruption prevention, the NAC submitted to the authors 28 expert reports and 4 opinions on draft normative acts. Also, 94 integrity records were issued, 4 operational analyses were carried out, and 320 people participated in anti-corruption training. The National Anti-Corruption Line received 45 calls, and 1,331 materials were registered in the institution's office.
