A man is under investigation by the National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC), under the procedural direction of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (APO), in a case of influence peddling. He allegedly demanded 30,000 euros from an individual to influence employees of a penitentiary.

According to preliminary data, the suspect claimed he could induce penitentiary officials, in the exercise of their official duties, to prepare the necessary documents and make appropriate decisions to submit a motion to the court for the release of a convict from serving their sentence, due to a serious illness. A tranche of the requested amount was handed over to the suspect under the supervision of the NAC officers.

Today, NAC officers and anti-corruption prosecutors conducted a search at the suspect's residence, seizing evidence relevant to the criminal case. The suspect was detained for 72 hours and placed in the NAC detention centre. Investigations are currently ongoing to establish all circumstances and identify any other individuals involved.

We remind that every person shall be presumed innocent until a final and irrevocable court decision is issued.
