The case of a head of the department of the Oncological Institute, accused of 5 counts of corruption, sent to court

The Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office has informed that, today, June 8, 2022, the criminal case of accusing a head of the department within the Oncological Institute was sent to court. He is accused of committing 5 episodes of passive corruption, manifested by claiming and accepting of goods that did not belong to him, to hasten the fulfillment of an action in the exercise of his function and actions committed by extortion of goods (art. 324 paragraph (2) of the Criminal Code).
Depending on the circumstances of the case, the head of the department, knowing about the poor health of the patients, to fulfill his duties, as well as to expedite the hospitalization in the Oncology Department, through relatives, claimed money that was not due to him, through embezzlement.
Thus, between September 2020 and February 2022, he demanded and received from the relatives of the patients, money that is not due to him in various amounts between 1400 euros to 2500 euros.
The money was received either in the office or in the hall of the medical institution.
After receiving money, the accused on the same day organized the initiation of the priority treatment procedure, without prior appointment, at the radiotherapy apparatus specific to the antitumor treatment, after which, also on the same day, he organized the hospitalization of the patients.
To mention that the accused did not admit his guilt in committing the incriminated crimes, refusing to make any statements on the circumstances of the investigated case. He is being held under house arrest for 30 days.
Subsequently, at the request of the prosecutors, with the authorization of the investigating judge, insurance measures were applied in the form of seizure, in view of a possible confiscation, on a dwelling in Chisinau, in the amount of 801,811.28 lei and a car, in the amount of 396,991.81.
Also, seizure was applied on two other dwellings in Chisinau, in the amount of 41,160 euros and 1,062,190.59, respectively, to ensure an extensive confiscation.
Note: A person charged with a criminal offense is presumed to be innocent until proved guilty according to law in a final conviction.
