Fifth person, accomplice in the 40 000-euro bribe case, detained by the NAC and prosecutors at Chisinau International Airport

Officers of the National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC) and prosecutors of Chisinau municipality detained today the fifth person, suspected of complicity in the influence peddling case in which four people were previously caught red-handed receiving a 40000-euro bribe. The suspect was detained at Chisinau International Airport, to be questioned and placed in the NAC detention centre for 72 hours.

We remind that last week, four people were detained by officers of the National Anti-corruption Centre, jointly with prosecutors of Chisinau municipality, when receiving a bribe worth 40 000 euros under control. The arrest took place in the Rîșcani district of the capital, shortly after the transfer of the amount, the action being documented by anti-corruption officers.

According to the case materials, the defendants had previously claimed the aforementioned amount, claiming that they would have influence over public figures to determine them to adopt a favourable decision in a criminal case. More precisely, they had promised that they could facilitate the release from criminal punishment of a person convicted in the first instance.

Following the searches carried out, the entire amount of 40 000 euros was seized, as well as electronic devices used to achieve the preliminary agreement regarding the commission of the crime.

The National Anti-corruption Centre continues criminal investigation actions to establish all the circumstances and identify all the people involved. We specify that any person shall presumed innocent until a final court decision is rendered.
