Former BEM president detained by the NAC and APO in money laundering case

Officers of the National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC), jointly with prosecutors from the Anti-corruption Prosecutor’s Office (APO), have detained a former president of Banca de Economii SA, who is under investigation in a criminal case for particularly large-scale money laundering.

According to the evidence collected, during his tenure, the suspect allegedly demanded and received illicit remuneration in exchange for facilitating the granting of certain loans. Subsequently, he allegedly engaged in money laundering activities involving the proceeds of this criminal activity by transferring the funds abroad.

The suspect was detained on the evening of July 29, 2026, for 72 hours and placed in the NAC detention centre. The criminal investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the case and to hold all involved individuals accountable.

Please note that every person shall be presumed innocent until a final and irrevocable court decision is issued.
