Former MP and ambassador, convicted of illicit enrichment: CARA of the NAC took over the administration of assets and cash worth about 1.5 million lei

Fost deputat - condamnat

The Chisinau Court, Buiucani headquarters, today pronounced the sentence in a high-profile case concerning a former Member of Parliament of the Republic of Moldova and former ambassador with special missions, convicted of illicit enrichment, according to art. 330² paragraph (2) of the Criminal Code.

According to the information presented by the court, between February 25, 2014 and July 23, 2019, the defendant unjustifiably accumulated assets and financial means worth over 1.97 million lei, an amount that considerably exceeds the legal income declared by him and his wife.

The targeted assets include apartments, a car, large amounts of cash, as well as suspicious transactions, incompletely or not at all reflected in the declarations of assets and personal interests. Prosecutors have demonstrated that the defendant intentionally introduced false data in these declarations, evading legal obligations of transparency.

The criminal trial took place between October 11, 2024 and August 14, 2025, before a judge specializing in corruption cases, with 21 court hearings taking place.

The court found him guilty and imposed the following penalties:
• Criminal fine of 9,000 conventional units, equivalent to 450,000 lei;
• Prohibition from holding public office and public dignity, as well as from working in the public sphere for 12 years;
• Special confiscation of the amount of 1,976,392.16 lei, the equivalent of the illegally obtained assets.

To guarantee the execution of the sanctions, the court maintained the seizure of:
• A 1/2 share of a 105.8 m² apartment, estimated at 1,421,063.38 lei;
• cash amounts: 44,800 euros and 34,900 US dollars — banknotes belonging to the defendant and were handed over for administration to the Criminal Assets Recovery Agency (CARA) under the National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC).

The sentence is not final and can be appealed to the Chisinau Court of Appeal, within 15 days.
