A man was sentenced to 5 years in prison for illegal financing of a political party. About 5.2 million lei are to be transferred to the state

The Chisinau Court, Buiucani seat, found a man guilty of illegal financing of a political party. The court ordered a 5-year prison sentence in a semi-closed penitentiary. The funds in the amount of approximately 5.2 million lei (which are in storage at the State Fiscal Service) were transferred to the state, including the defendant's mobile phone.

According to the investigations conducted by the National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC) jointly with the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office (APO) and the National Investigation Inspectorate (INI), in the period February - March 2024, the defendant was allegedly involved in illegal activities of financing the political party. During this period, he allegedly met repeatedly with another man in the Chisinau municipality, therefore, considerable sums of money were allegedly transferred, ignoring the legal provisions regarding the financing of political parties.

The defendant was arrested upon receiving the sum of 613,500 lei, money that was to be transported to an apartment in Chisinau. Following the searches carried out in that apartment, another approximately 4.6 million lei in cash were discovered.

Throughout the examination of the case, the defendant denied committing the acts. Since he did not appear at the sentencing, the court ordered the application of the preventive measure - preventive arrest, being announced as wanted.

The sentence can be appealed to the Centre Court of Appeal within 15 days.

Note: A person accused of committing a crime shall be presumed innocent until proven guilty by a final court decision.
