NAC officers are conducting new searches in Căinari in an electoral corruption case

The National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC) and the prosecutors of Chisinau municipality have announced searches at a resident of Căinari town, Căușeni district, investigated in an electoral corruption case. According to preliminary information, during the presidential elections in the fall of 2024, the person, acting as a representative of a political party, allegedly sent financial means, with amounts ranging from 500 lei to 2000 lei, to several persons with the right to vote, asking them to express their voting option in favour of a certain candidate.

Thus, following the criminal investigation actions carried out, the person was recognized as a suspect, and objects that are to be subjected to expertise were seized from his residence. The suspect will be investigated at liberty.

We specify that persons who offer money to influence the results of an election risk from 1 year to 5 years in prison and a fine of over 50 000 lei, and to ensure the recovery of the damage, law enforcement agencies may seize the person's assets. At the same time, persons who denounce the illicit acts and cooperate with the criminal investigation body may be released from criminal or contravention liability.

We remind that so far the NAC has imposed fines of over 11 million lei in contravention cases of passive electoral corruption. Also, 10 criminal cases, initiated by the NAC and the prosecutors of the municipality of Chisinau, on acts of electoral corruption have already reached the court.
