The NAC Synthesis: Corruption scheme in the transport sector, resulting in the detention of 10 people, exposed and seizures of about 2 million lei, applied by the CARA

The National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC) has presented the main actions carried out in the previous week in the field of combating and preventing corruption, as well as the recovery of criminal assets. During the reporting period, the NAC officers carried out criminal investigation actions in a case of trafficking and buying influence in the transport sector within the framework of 20 criminal cases. According to the investigation, the owner of a transport network allegedly took bribes from other transporters, promising them in return that he would influence civil servants to ignore violations and not check them during the transport of goods, parcels and passengers. Following the searches, 10 people were detained and cash in various currencies was seized, totalling more than the equivalent of 120,000 euros.

At the same time, the Chisinau court, Buiucani seat, pronounced the sentence of conviction against a former deputy minister of Finance, found guilty of committing crimes of passive corruption and active corruption. The court imposed, through partial accumulation of sentences, a sentence of 9 years in prison in a women's penitentiary, a fine of 450,000 lei and deprived her of the right to hold public office for a period of 12 years. During the week, anti-corruption officers initiated 32 new criminal cases. Eight people detained in files managed by the NAC are in penitentiary institutions.

The Criminal Assets Recovery Agency (CARA) seized assets worth approximately 2 million lei in cases involving human trafficking, fraud and intentional harm to body or health. In addition, 4 million lei were deposited in the treasury accounts of the NAC.

In the field of corruption prevention, the NAC submitted 29 expert reports and 2 opinions on draft normative acts to the authors. Also, 2 operational analyses were completed, 141 integrity records were issued, and approximately 800 people participated in anti-corruption training. The National Anti-corruption Line received 52 calls, and 1,838 materials were registered in the NAC Chancellery.
