NAC Synthesis: Eight people detained in corruption cases, over 5 million lei seized and assets worth over 7.7 million lei seized

The National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC) presents the weekly balance sheet of the activities carried out in the fields of combating and preventing corruption, as well as in the field of criminal assets recovery. During the reference period, 7 people, including four civil servants with the status of leaders within the General Directorate of Housing, Communal Affairs and Development of the Chisinau City Hall and three economic agents, were detained, being suspected of having implemented a criminal scheme of illegally demanding, accepting and receiving commissions from the value of awarded auctions. On Friday, the court issued preventive arrest warrants for 5 defendants, one person was placed under house arrest and another person was placed under judicial control. We remind, that following the searches, the NAC seized over 5 million lei, the origin of which is yet to be established. At the same time, searches were carried out at Penitentiary No. 6 Soroca in a case of passive and active corruption, and a head of department was detained. During the reported period, the NAC's criminal investigation officers initiated 9 criminal cases.

At the same time, the NAC's Criminal Assets Recovery Agency (CARA) seized assets of illicit origin worth over 7.7 million lei. The seized assets include 2 residential and 4 non-residential buildings, 2 residential premises, a means of transport, 2 agricultural and 2 construction lands, 4 bank accounts and 12 cryptocurrencies. The assets were seized in cases of theft, fraud, illegal obtaining and/or disclosure of information constituting a trade secret and abuse of power. Several seizures, previously applied, in the amount of over 4 million lei, were confirmed by court decisions.

In the field of corruption prevention, the Legislation Directorate submitted 23 legislative expertise reports and 3 opinions to the authors. At the same time, 169 integrity records were issued, and 46 calls were received at the National Anti-corruption Line. 1714 materials were registered in the institution's office.
