NAC Synthesis: Head of Balti Hospital, placed in preventive arrest, convictions and seizures applied to criminal assets in the amount of over 10 million lei

The National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC) has presented the weekly balance sheet of the activities carried out in the fields of combating and preventing corruption, as well as on the recovery of assets derived from crimes. During the reference period, the NAC officers and prosecutors conducted searches in corruption files in several medical units in the north of the country targeting the allegedly illicit actions of some decision-makers. Following the criminal investigation, the head of the Balti Hospital was detained and subsequently arrested for 30 days, being accused of evading legal public procurement procedures by favouring certain economic agents, which caused significant damage to the medical institution.

During the same period, three individuals, investigated by the National Anti-corruption Centre and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, were convicted of influence peddling. The Chisinau Court, Buiucani, found them guilty and ordered each of them to pay a fine of 125,000 lei and to confiscate for the benefit of the state, jointly and severally from their account, the equivalent of 3,150 euros.

The Criminal Assets Recovery Agency (CARA) seized assets worth approximately 2.4 million lei, including residential and non-residential premises, means of transport, agricultural land and cash. Freezing orders were also issued for an amount of 140 000 lei, and the seizures previously applied to illicit assets worth over 8 million lei were confirmed by court decisions.

At the moment, 10 people accused in the cases managed by the Centre are in preventive detention in penitentiary institutions.

In the field of corruption prevention, the Legislation Directorate has submitted 12 legislative expertise reports and 5 opinions to the authors, and the National Anti-corruption Hotline has received 49 calls. 1225 materials have been registered in the institution's Chancellery.
