The NAC synthesis: a man remanded in custody for 20 days in an influence-peddling case, over 5.5 million lei in assets frozen
The National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC) presents its key operational results from the past week across corruption fighting, prevention, and criminal assets recovery.
During the reporting period, the NAC officers detained a man in an influence-peddling case. The suspect allegedly claimed and received 17,500 euros from an individual, promising to influence public officials and dignitaries to shield the person from criminal liability. The court (Ciocana headquarters) ordered his pre-trial detention for 20 days. Additionally, criminal investigative officers reported the opening of 7 new criminal cases and recommended the referral of 15 cases to trial. Currently, 3 individuals are held in the NAC detention facility, and 14 others charged in the NAC-managed cases are held in pre-trial custody in penitentiaries.
At the end of the week, the National Anti-corruption Centre, the General Prosecutor's Office (PG), the Ministry of Justice (MJ), the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI), the Ministry of Health (MS), the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection (MMPS), and the Customs Service (SV) signed an inter-institutional order approving the Regulation on the identification, examination, registration, documentation, and reporting of alleged cases of torture, inhuman, or degrading treatment.
The Criminal Assets Recovery Agency (CARA) seized 14 assets valued at approximately 5.5 million lei in a case involving smuggling, illicit drug trafficking, unauthorized land exploitation, passive bribery, and fraud. The frozen assets include a share capital, 2 constructions, 5 premises and 6 land plots. Furthermore, the Agency took 243,000 lei into administration and deposited over 1.5 million lei into treasury accounts.
In the area of corruption prevention, the NAC delivered 28 anti-corruption expertise report and 2 advisory opinions on draft normative acts. Approximately 900 people attended anti-corruption training sessions organized by the NAC's Anticorruption Education Directorate, and 92 users from the judicial and tax systems completed practical sessions hosted by the CARA on operating the Automated Information System " Registry of Seized and Confiscated Criminal Assets" (SIA RBII).
The National Anti-corruption Line received 72 calls, and 1,821 materials were registered in the institution's secretariat.
