The NAC Synthesis: Seizures and freezing orders on criminal assets of about 45 million lei and detentions in systemic corruption cases
The National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC) has presented the main actions carried out in the previous week in the field of combating and preventing corruption, as well as the criminal assets recovery. During the reporting period, the NAC officers carried out searches in the north of the country, as a result of which 5 people were detained in corruption cases in the construction sector. Also last week, criminal investigation actions were carried out in a case of influence peddling, and the investigations concern a scheme through which employment was allegedly promised within the Moldsilva Agency.
In another case, a former trainee lawyer from Chisinau was detained in flagrante delicto for influence peddling and placed in preventive detention for 30 days. He allegedly demanded and received 32,000 euros from two convicts, claiming that he would have influence over judges and that he could induce them to adopt a favourable decision regarding their release from detention. At the same time, criminal investigation officers announce the initiation of 13 new criminal cases. Currently, 8 defendants, detained in the files managed by the Centre, are placed in preventive detention in penitentiary institutions.
The Criminal Assets Recovery Agency (CARA) seized assets worth approximately 16.5 million lei in a file regarding abuse of power, organization of illegal migration and negligence in service and issued freezing orders for 8 million lei. Other previous seizures of approximately 20.4 million lei were confirmed by the court.
In the field of corruption prevention, the NAC submitted 18 expert reports and 4 opinions on draft normative acts to the authors. Also, 2 operational analyses were completed, 92 integrity records were cleared, and about 240 officials participated in anti-corruption training. The National Anti-corruption Line received 41 calls, and 1518 materials were registered in the institution's office.
