NAC weekly synthesis: Convictions, searches and seizures of over 1.2 million lei applied on illicit assets

Bilanțul săptămânal al CNA: Condamnări, percheziții și sechestre în valoare de peste 1,2 milioane de lei aplicate pe bunuri ilicite

The National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC) carried out, in the previous week, a series of important actions in the field of combating and preventing corruption, as a result of which significant seizures were applied, searches were carried out in high-profile cases and sentences were pronounced against public figures.

Among the most important achievements:
A former Member of Parliament of the Republic of Moldova and ambassador, investigated by the NAC and anticorruption prosecutors for illicit enrichment, was sentenced to a fine of approximately 450,000 Lei, a ban on holding public office for 12 years and the confiscation of approximately 2 million lei. Assets and cash worth approximately 1.5 million lei were taken over for administration by the NAC's Criminal Assets Recovery Agency. The searches took place in a bribery case of 1,700 euros for employment in a law institution, as well as in a case of influence peddling with the object of the bribe worth 3,000 euros targeting a lawyer from Chisinau. Also, the architect of the Comrat City Hall is being investigated for passive corruption and influence peddling, being suspected of having demanded money for the issuance of a construction permit. Two other people were convicted of influence peddling, manifested by demanding a cumulative amount of 65 thousand euros, and were sentenced to up to 7 and a half years in prison, partially suspended. 

The Criminal Assets Recovery Agency of the NAC seized assets of illicit origin worth over 1.2 million lei, including means of transport, share capital and cash. In the area of corruption prevention, the NAC's Legislation Department sent 14 expert reports and 3 opinions on legislative projects to the authors, and the National Anti-corruption Hotline received 52 calls. About 1,600 materials were registered in the Centre’s Chancellery.
