A resident of Ungheni district, detained by the NAC and prosecutors for influencing customs officers to fraudulently import cars from the EU into the Republic of Moldova

The National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC) and the Prosecutor's Office of the municipality of Balti have announced the detention of a resident of Ungheni district in a case of influence peddling. The man is suspected of systematically demanding various amounts of money in exchange for influencing customs employees in order to illegally import cars from the European Union into the Republic of Moldova.

According to the criminal investigation, the suspect allegedly claimed that he had influence over the employees of the Sculeni Customs Post of the Customs Service and that he could determine them to accept the temporary import of two cars, registered in European Union countries, for 450 euros and 600 euros. He is also suspected of having brokered the illegal import of another car, registered in one of the EU countries, by a person who did not have the right to import cars registered abroad into the territory of the Republic of Moldova. For the brokerage, he allegedly demanded 400 euros, which he received under the control of the NAC.

Today, the employees of the Centre under the leadership of the Prosecutor's Office of the municipality of Balti are conducting searches in the Ungheni district of the suspect. He was detained for 72 hours.

We remind that any person shall be presumed innocent until a final and irrevocable court decision is pronounced.
