A systemic corruption scheme involving two heads of departments of the Florești District Hospital was exposed by the officers of the National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC) and prosecutors of the municipality of Balti. According to the evidence administered, the two officials allegedly demanded and accepted illicit remuneration from patients for various services, provided contrary to their functional duties. Over 20 searches took place at several addresses in Chișinău, Balti and Florești, the actions targeting medical institutions, medical diagnostic centers and pharmaceutical companies.

In fact, the suspects allegedly acted in complicity with several people from the medical system, through corruption and influence peddling, which they allegedly determined to issue medical conclusions to determine the degrees of disability in the physical absence of the patients. They would also have issued patients with referrals for medical examinations at certain private diagnostic centres, and for each examination they would have received a 15 percent commission from economic agents per service provided. During the investigations, it was also found that the same scheme would have worked with medical prescriptions. The suspects would have issued patients with prescriptions for pharmaceutical preparations, with the specific indication of the economic agent from which the medicines were to be purchased, for which they also received commissions.

Following the searches carried out today, under the procedural leadership of the prosecutors of the municipality of Balti, financial means, the origin of which is to be established, draft documents and information carriers were seized. The two employees of the Floresti District Hospital are to be questioned and subsequently investigated while at liberty for influence peddling and passive corruption.
