30,000 euros for a convict's release. Man indicted following NAC and APO investigation

The Anti-corruption Prosecutor's Office announces the conclusion of the criminal investigation and the referral to court, for trial on the merits, of a case in which a man is charged with influence peddling.

According to evidence gathered by the National Anti-corruption Center (NAC) in collaboration with the Anti-corruption Prosecutor's Office, the accused allegedly demanded 30,000 euros from an individual this past May, claiming he could influence prison staff. He reportedly claimed he could persuade prison officials—acting within their official duties—to prepare the necessary documents and make the appropriate decisions to submit a court petition for the release of a convict from serving their sentence due to a serious illness.

An installment of 10,000 euros of the demanded sum was allegedly handed over to the accused under the supervision of the NAC officers.

The criminal case has been referred to the Chișinău Court (Buiucani headquarters) for trial on the merits.

The law prescribes a penalty of a fine ranging from 100,000 to 150,000 lei or imprisonment for up to six years for the offense of influence peddling.

Note: A person accused of committing a crime shall be presumed innocent until proven guilty by a final court judgment.
