The NAC weekly synthesis: searches in abuse of power and influence peddling cases, and seizures of assets worth over 13.5 million lei
The National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC) presents the main activities carried out during the past week in the fields of combating and preventing corruption, as well as recovering criminal assets. During the reporting period, the NAC conducted criminal investigative actions in two cases.
The first case involves the president of the Taraclia district, the head of the Construction Committee, and a public procurement specialist, who are suspected of abuse of power and bid rigging by favoring a company managed covertly. They allegedly inflated cost estimates for repairs at educational institutions, causing an estimated loss of 3 million lei to the public budget for the year 2025 alone. In the second case, a lawyer from Chisinau municipality is being investigated for influence peddling; he is suspected of claiming and accepting 10,000 euros from a inmate's relatives, claiming he could influence public officials to secure the prisoner's release from custody.
At the same time, the Balti Court (Central Headquarters) handed down a 4-year prison sentence to a man investigated by the NAC and APO, who was found guilty of fraud and six counts of influence peddling.
During the reference period, criminal investigation officers reported the initiation of 9 new criminal cases and the referral of 9 other files to court. Currently, 8 defendants in cases managed by the NAC are held in pre-trial detention in two penitentiary institutions.
The Criminal Assets Recovery Agency (CARA) seized assets valued at over 13.5 million lei as part of a case concerning illegal financing of political parties.
In the field of prevention, the NAC submitted 26 expert reports and 3 opinions on draft normative acts to their authors. Furthermore, 91 integrity records were issued, 2 operational analyses were conducted, and over 240 officials attended anti-corruption training sessions. The National Anti-corruption Hotline received 53 calls, while 1,392 materials were registered by the Chancellery.
